Book Covers Changing

We've all seen the popular book covers change over time and for different reasons. Sometimes we like them more while the rest we wish they would have just left them alone. And buying these beautiful books also means spending money. Movies This is a popular one. The book to movie adaptation comes out and wha bam! New book cover! There are a few I find ok or even just as good such as the cover for Paper Towns or Hunger Games . However, I didn't like the changes for the Divergent series or The Fault in Our Stars . If the cover is going to change for a movie, I want it to be good. Anniversaries A book celebrates its anniversary, and the covers are redone in honor of that. Percy Jackson and the Olympians  looks cool, but I personally like the old covers better. The same goes for the newer  Harry Potter.  The scene the spines form are a cool touch. It may be because I grew up with a certain design and now I'm used to it. However, if I were to purchase the series I w

School of Deaths Review

Image
School of Deaths  is a fantasy young adult book written by Christopher Mannino. This is the first installment in The Scythe Wielder's Secret. Susan Sarnio is essentially kidnapped and taken to the World of Deaths. She is the only girl because females are frowned upon. Suzie is mistreated by her teachers and many of the students who all expect her to fail. Despite this, she is determined to pass the final test and return home. However, along the way several plots are uncovered as well as the fact she might have been brought to the strange, fantastical world for a reason. Suzie also faces the fact that home is not always what it seems. I love how right from the beginning I was pulled in by the book and did not want to stop reading. The buildup to most of the adventures is excellent. I had a lot of questions that I wanted answered right away, but patience was required because they were all answered when I finished the book. I was able to figure some of the things out early on, w

5 Tips for Writing Projects

We've all had some form of writing to do before, whether it be an essay, book, or presentation. No matter which project it is, and even though they're done over and over, we fall into the same old habits. Here are some tips that will hopefully make your writing experience easier. Tip 1 : Have a schedule. Telling yourself "I'll get this done and that done" doesn't show many results, at least from my experience. However, if I write something down on paper and plan my time, I'm more likely to actually get it accomplished. It also feels more official, and I certainly don't like to keep anything official waiting. Tip 2 : Don't Procrastinate. This also goes back to tip 1. Hopefully a schedule should help with this. If you were planning on going to a movie, but you're project isn't as far along as it should be, that trip might just need to be put off. Tip 3 : Give yourself a deadline. These can be arranged as needed if you get ahead or some

Life Behind the Wall Review

Image
Life Behind the Wall is written by Robert Elmer and is Christian juvenile historical fiction. It is a set and includes three books Candy Bombers, Beetle Bunker, and Smuggler's Treasure. All three of the books follow one family's story in Berlin, Germany from after World War II to after the Iron Curtain came down. Candy Bombers  is about real candy drops that happened over East Berlin. Beetle Bunker follows a thirteen year old girl who finds a underground bunker, and eventually uses it to help her family escape. Smuggler's Treasure takes place in 1989. The third generation family member ends up uncovering deep secrets from her family's history and sees the wall be torn down. I really enjoyed reading the series. It kept me intrigued the majority of the time. These are great stories packed with action and history. I managed to learn a few things while reading. German was used, which was a cool experience because a bit of their culture was experienced. Elmer always

Mockingjay Part 2 Movie Review

I went to go see Mockingjay Part 2 the day it came out and decided to write a review since I don't have a book to post a review for at the moment. Spoilers after this point. Read at your own risk. Sticking to the Book Overall they did a wonderful job sticking to the book. The action was brought well to life without changing the plot ( Mockingjay was kind of dry). Of course, minor characters were cut out, so Prim went to talk to Peeta instead of the original character. I think the scene played out great despite this (I felt like they were actually pulling lines from the book). Katniss sneaks to the Capitol instead of Coin actually sending her there. The scorpion mutts were changed to be these humanoid type things, which was kind of disappointing (because in the book the scorpions got to shoot them). Yes, everyone died that was supposed to. The last line before  the epilogue scene was "Real" which was the best thing ever. Well, besides the epilogue because that was pre

Review: The Loners by Lex Thomas

Image
Over the summer the librarian asked me to review the series  Quarantine . I read the first book and wrote a review, and I have decided to publish it on my blog (it is also on Goodreads).   The Loners is a riveting book about everyday people who attend high school, written by Lex Thomas as a young adult book series. Told from the several teenagers’ points of view enables us to be able to understand on a whole different level of what is happening in this messed up state.    Set in modern day Colorado, it is hard to suspect anything could happen. It is a new school year, with a whole new building also. Enter David. The old quarterback for McKinley’s football team ends up getting into some fights that will put David and his little brother Will into the worst position. The whole school seems to know went down between him and the new quarterback, Sam, at the party. So when an illegally made virus sweeps the department, it’s two brothers up against the rest of McKinley. With an illness

The Genre of Historical Fiction

There are 3 types of people: those who like fiction, those who like nonfiction, and those that read both. If you're like me, reading non-fiction feels like a chore. Why? Let's face the fact: it's real, and not everything that happened is interesting (some books are downright boring). However, we all need a dose of reality, and because fiction books are well, fiction, they can't bring that to us. Sure, there are truths here and there, but who sees a dystopia with five factions? (I'll do a post on fiction later). And that's where historical fiction comes in to play. The book is based around events in history while providing fictional characters that give a sense of adventure that we desire. Sometimes they tweak the history a bit by creating a new character and inserting them in the real person's place, allowing for creativeness in story line. Life Behind the Wall  by Robert Elmer provides an example of this. Don't like history? That's okay. I sti

Cussing/Cursing in Books: Solutions

Now a days books seem to have much more c o l o r f u l language than they used to. Some readers are uncomfortable with such language, and cannot read a book without their conscience being troubled. There are several ways to get around this. Don't read the book! Yeah, this one is pretty boring, but if the cussing/cursing is extensive, I suggest not reading it (same goes for movies, don't see it). If someone is pushing you into reading it, then it doesn't matter how they might judge you. If you have something that bothers you, avoid it. Standards you have, make sure they are applied. Borrow it from the library , that way if you get uneasy while reading it, no harm done and no money wasted. Just return it at the earliest time possible. White out . Some of you may hate me for suggesting this, but it really works. You can do it yourself, chapter by chapter (or the book as a whole at once) or get a friend to white it out. My seventh grade literature teacher did this t
