Island of Graves Review

Island of Graves is by Lisa McMann and is the sixth book in the Unwanteds series. It is middle grade fantasy.

"On the brink of war, the fates of both Artimé and Quill are at stake in book six of the New York Times bestselling Unwanteds series, which Kirkus Reviews called “The Hunger Games meets Harry Potter.”

Alex and Aaron Stowe are at a crossroads.

Everything Aaron has worked so hard to build in Quill has crumbled. Fallen from the height of power and influence and left for dead in a foreign place, Aaron has lost everything, and now he must humbly beg for food from those who saved his life.

In Artimé, Alex chooses his people over his brother and abandons his search for Aaron, closing the door on that relationship forever. The Artimeans need his focus now more than ever as they face the terrifying power of a new enemy who has taken control of Quill—the notoriously evil Gondoleery Rattrapp.
Desperate to stop her, Alex embarks on a risky mission to enlist help from an unlikely ally, and along the way he’s determined to rescue a lone sailor from monstrous beasts with mysterious origins—a sailor who just might show Alex a different world. As he prepares for an epic war with all of Quill and Artime hanging in the balance, Alex must place his faith in a reckless plan...and hope that he and all of his friends make it through alive."~Goodreads

I read this book in four days. Despite it being the second to last book in the series I ate it up and had no intention of stopping.

The character growth is nice. I like how throughout the series they come to terms or change in different areas. And Sky is just great. I love her attitude toward her admirer about how she won't date him till he stops being hard on himself. I ship them. And Aaron, wow. Talk about personality. Kaylee cracked me up and I just love her in general. That's one of the things I like about the characters is they feel so 3D.

There was also a unique "plot twist" I haven't seen before. I really wish I could say what it was because I sat there for a while going "wow. That just happened. I can't believe it. Maybe I can. I dunno. It's cool."

In the previous books there seems to be more time dedicated to each island, which is fine. I just like how McMann kind of realized they didn't need to spend as much time on the Island of Graves and how they slowly learn about it. Yes, there is a type of battle in every book, and it might get repetitive to some, it adds lots of action. (I have read the last book at this point. It was a good battle but not my favorite. I will not be posting a review on it because I have two other books to review.)

If you want a fun read with action, I recommend picking up this series.
