Game of Lives Review

Game of Lives is the third and final installment in the Mortality Doctrine series written by James Dashner. The first two books are titles Eye of Minds and Rule of Thoughts. The genre is sci-fi.

"Michael used to live to game.

Now the games he was playing have become all too real. Only weeks ago, Sinking into the Sleep was fun. The VirtNet combined the most cutting-edge technology and the most sophisticated gaming for a full mind-body experience. And it was Michael’s passion. But now every time Michael Sinks, he risks his life.
The games are over. The VirtNet has become a world of deadly consequences, and Kaine grows stronger by the day. The Mortality Doctrine—Kaine’s master plan—has nearly been realized, and little by little the line separating the virtual from the real is blurring. If Kaine succeeds, it will mean worldwide cyber domination. And it looks like Michael and his friends are the only ones who can put the monster back in the box—ifMichael can figure out who his friends really are."~Goodreads

It had been about a year since I read the second book, so I barely remembered the ending, and barely who Gabby was (she's kind of a side character). Nevertheless, I was excited to find out what happened. And oh boy, it was wonderful. I was pulled in from the start -- partly because I wanted to know the ending-- and my attention was held until the end. The plot twist was almost mind-blowing. It was similar to that of Swipe by Evan Angler, and there was little hints throughout, so that's why I say almost.

The characters where so realistic. Michael, Bryson, Sarah, Gabby and the rest reacted to situations probably just the way we would if we faced the same problems. Death was a legit thing that was "scary" for many different reasons and they handled it realistically. A special thanks to Dashner for no major killings until this book, but despite this there is hope. In all honesty, I wish I could code to some extent or be as good at something as Michael is at coding.

When I first started the series, the plot kind of wierded me out, but I still found it fascinating at the same time. The novel was like the Civil War, or a war against ourselves. There was people who were similar and you would think should be on the same side, fighting for different reasons. Some of the statements make you want to go question reality as well while others can change perspectives (which reminded me on ominalists). Let's just say they were food for thought. The Maze Runner references were fabulous; I love it when authors will connect their books like that.

Game of Lives was a wonderful, fabulous, and epic conclusion to the Mortality Doctrine series.
