Mickey Malloy, Wonder Boy Review
Mickey Malloy, Wonder Boy!, by Laurisa White Reyes, is a children's book, geared for ages 6-10.
"Mickey Malloy is just your average kid who loves comic books and superheroes. When a mysterious package arrives with his name on it, he finds a strange contraption inside. Urged on by his friend, Juanita, Mickey pushes the thing’s button and gets ZZZZZZAPPED! Suddenly, he ism’t a normal kid anymore, he’s Mickey Malloy, Wonder Boy! The human magnet! But what seems like an awesome superpower gets Mickey into more trouble than he could possibly imagine."-Goodreads
The premise of the book interested me because it's about a normal kid who gets what he thinks might be a superpower, only to see his day go downhill. Mickey just wants to be able to walk around again without being a human magnet and I wanted to see how he would handle this new ability, which led to me reading it in one sitting.
I haven't read a kid's chapter book since I was that age, so I forgot the how world building worked in the stories, but this book was a good refresher. It captured Mickey's life very well without going into too much detail, along with events leading up to the day he got the power. While I would hate to walk around and have metal objects stick to me, I couldn't help but find it entertaining to read about and feel suspense at what he would do to counteract this issue. The resolution he found had me laughing. On another note, please, I need to know more behind the package! So many unanswered questions.
I felt like I could relate to Mickey despite the age difference. After all, he likes superheroes, I like superheroes. Waking up with a power would be amazing. I could also totally understand his annoyance toward Juanita since she liked to ask a bunch of questions. Their friendship shows how even though we may not like every trait in our friends, we still love them and will put up with them (because that's what good friends do).
It was nice to read about someone with a "power" outside of a comic book, especially in a story geared towards kids. I think stories like Mickey Malloy, Wonder Boy! can also be a springboard into the world of comics when kids get older.
Reyes created a funny story about a normal kid with a not-so-ordinary experience, and I would recommend it for any child interested in the realm of superheroes.
